Heavy Vehicle Use Tax
IRS Form 2290
Filed before the July deadline. Schedule 1 in your hands fast.
Who needs this
Is this you?
If you operate a truck with a registered gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more on a public highway, the IRS wants Form 2290, the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax. The amount due depends on the truck's weight category and the months it operates.
- Owner-operators with a single tractor over 55,000 lbs
- Fleets: one 2290 covers all of a carrier's heavy vehicles
- Carriers who just bought a heavy truck mid-year (the deadline is different for newly-purchased units)
- Anyone who needs the stamped Schedule 1 to renew or get plates
What we file
The actual work, in plain language.
Form 2290 calculates the federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax. We e-file it with the IRS, pay the tax on your behalf if you'd like, and get the stamped Schedule 1 back, which is the document state DMVs require before they'll issue or renew your plates.
- Form 2290 with the correct weight category for each truck
- Tax calculation (current rates run from $100 to $550 per truck depending on weight)
- IRS e-filing and payment coordination
- Stamped Schedule 1 returned to you, usually within hours of submission
- Amended returns when a truck's weight changes mid-year
When it's due
August 31 each year, covering the tax year July 1 through June 30. For trucks purchased mid-year, the deadline is the last day of the month following the month the truck was first used.
What happens if you miss it
Missing the August 31 deadline starts a 4.5% penalty plus interest, escalating monthly until you file. More urgently: without a stamped Schedule 1, you can't renew your truck's plates anywhere. State DMVs require it before they'll process registration.
Our process
Three handoffs. That's it.
01
You send the trucks.
VINs, registered weights, and the date each truck was first used in the tax year. If you bought a new one this year, just tell us when it hit the road.
02
We file and pay.
We e-file Form 2290 with the IRS and coordinate payment of the tax owed. If you'd rather pay the IRS directly, we'll set up the EFTPS draft on your terms.
03
You get the Schedule 1.
Stamped Schedule 1 comes back from the IRS, usually within hours, and we send it to you the same day. You bring it to the DMV to renew plates.
